Does CoolSculpting Hurt?

CoolSculpting is an exciting procedure that eliminates fat without invasive surgery. This is achieved through cryolipolysis, or fat-freezing. It’s best suited for targeting stubborn pockets of fat that are unresponsive to traditional weight loss methods, such as fat in the lower abdomen, hips or arms. The procedure is FDA-approved and requires virtually no recovery time, meaning patients can receive their treatments and go back to work the next day.

As safe and convenient as it is, CoolSculpting has its own side effects just like any other cosmetic procedure. However, they’re less severe when compared to other procedures, like liposuction or injections. One of the top concerns people have about CoolSculpting is the pain level.

Does CoolSculpting Hurt?

Generally, CoolSculpting isn’t a painful procedure. Some mild pain is normal, but it’s usually short-term and felt at the beginning of treatment. This is because the CoolSculpting applicator exposes the flesh to extremely cold temperatures, which has a natural anesthetic effect.

If the patient feels any pain or discomfort, it’s usually during the procedure itself and rarely lingers after the treatment is completed. Some mild stinging, pinching or pulling sensations are normal, but these sensations normally last about 5-10 minutes until the area is sufficiently numbed from the cold. A little bit of pain, itchiness, or swelling immediately after the applicator is removed is also normal but expected to subside.

Serious complications are relatively rare, affecting less than 1% of cases. Some other mild effects include:

  • Bruising
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Muscle spasms
  • Tenderness
  • Nausea

Tips for Managing Discomfort

CoolSculpting requires no anesthesia or local anesthetic. Most doctors recommend an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, for managing pain and swelling after CoolSculpting. Taking them before the procedure isn’t recommended because it can increase the likelihood of bruising. Other doctor-approved methods for managing pain include:

  • Gentle massage
  • Warm compresses
  • Light exercise
  • Deep breathing

Are You a Candidate?

CoolSculpting is not a weight-loss procedure. Instead, it’s intended for reducing stubborn areas of fat that are more difficult to target with exercising and dieting alone. The ideal candidate is within 30 pounds of their ideal weight, good health and has realistic expectations about the procedure.
